Ok, sure an orange chili margarita might not scream “winter cocktail” but let’s be honest, that’s the point. Depending on where you live, winter can be a long and pretty exhausting experience. Shorter days and colder temperatures make for the perfect combination to stay indoors. No matter how much you love winter, I am sure at some point you are dreaming about laying on a beach somewhere sipping on a delicious cocktail. That’s the inspiration for this pairing. The smell of a very juicy, refreshing orange and gentle kick of chili pepper is just enough to hit you on the coldest and most stressful of winter days. A spicy orange margarita follows suit perfectly, what tequila drink doesn’t? The rimmed edge with a lime chili pepper salt is spicy but also familiar. The lime salt allows you to enjoy the truly juicy and fruity nature of the drink while still reminding you that it is tequila at the bottom of it all.
- Lime wedges
- Lime-chile powder (I use Trader Joe’s brand)
- 1-1/2 cups orange juice
- 2 oz. tequila (I used 1800)
- 2 oz. lime juice
- 2 oz. agave nectar
- Salt (optional)
Fill a small bowl with 2-3 tablespoons of lime-chile powder. Moisten the rim of two glasses with a lime wedge. Dip moistened rims in the lime-chile powder; set aside.
In a 2-cup measuring cup, whisk together the orange juice, lime juice, and agave nectar; set aside. Fill the lime-chile rimmed glasses with ice. Pour 1 oz. of tequila into each glass. Pour half of the orange juice mixture into each glass; season each glass with a pinch of salt and lime-chile powder. Stir gently to combine.
